Meet Cassie

My first recollection of cake decorating was when I was only 13, and my Auntie took me to Welshpool Sugar Craft Guild to watch a demonstration on how to make an orchid. I was instantly hooked and amazed by how a singular ball of paste could turn into something so realistic. I was fortunate enough that, my Auntie, shortly after the demonstration bought me my first ever orchid cutter and flower paste, and I have never looked back since.

What made me want to pursue my passion in the cake decorating field was after winning my first bronze, at the age of 14, which then led me in later years to win several gold awards and best in shows for my sugar flowers.

Nearly 30 years on, I am now sharing my experiences with people all over the world and hopefully inspiring them to create and gain the passion I gained as a child.

When did you start airbrushing?

I was introduced to airbrushing in 2006. I had a day lesson and loved it, but it was a different story when I got home. I was so scared, so luckily, I fell pregnant with my son Harry and put it off for a year, then Shesto asked me to try a new airbrush they had, which I fell in love with; the rest is history.

When did you publish your first book?

2010, I self-published my first book, Sugar Sensations, and then I was approached by search press to write my second book, Airbrushing on Cakes, in 2015 and The Kew Book of Sugar Flowers, in 2018. I’m now thinking about the next one.

Are you artistic?

I love art, airbrushing, pencils, watercolours, and any medium. It’s my relaxation where I get lost in my work, and all the world’s worries disappear.

When did you enter your first cake competition?

At age 14, I entered Telford BSG International under 16s. I came 3rd with a bronze but got really good feedback, so I entered more, winning several golds and best in shows in competitions up and down the country.

What do you love about teaching?

Giving people the confidence to try new things and take new skills away with them, Personal development and empowerment are very important.

Do you still make cakes?

No, I always made cakes and turned them into a business when I had Charlotte in 2000, but I evolved the business into teaching and selling products more in 2012.

Do you have other hobbies?

There’s not much I don’t like, to be honest! I do love art, gardening, floristry and wildlife, I also love motorbikes! And ride-outs.

Do you have children?

Yes, 3, but there are not children now, all above 17 years old. The eldest is Charlotte, and two boys, Sam and Harry.

Have you designed for Magazines?

Yes, I regularly contributed to several magazines and did how-to tutorials.

Do you do Demonstrations and workshops?

Yes, I do, but I limit how many I do in a year as there is only one of me; I still travel, too. If you would like more info, please feel free to contact me.

When did you become a judge?

2012, I think, I was trained at Cake International, and I had the honour of judging several shows, including The Royal Welsh and in Australia and Sweden.
